The Story

Join the narrator as she observes her neighborhood through the seasons. Meet the Sax Man, play basketball, watch the kids jumping rope in these delightful fun-to-read poems.

Writing Games

Poems come in all shapes and sizes. Some rhyme and some don't. When writing "Big Boys Shooting Hoops," I thought about the form or shape of the poem. I wanted to write a free verse (non-rhyming) poem that looked sort of like a game of basketball. Because people dribble, jump, pivot, and shoot in a game, I began each line in a different place so that the poem "moves" around a lot--just like someone playing basketball. Do you have a favorite sport or activity? How might you make a poem look like someone playing soccer or running or even reading a book?
